About the College of Health Sciences

The College of Health Sciences was established in 2010 after intensive planing and understanding of the health needs of Nigeria. With a good blend of sound scholars and professionally trained experts in different medical fields, the college of medicine is thriving excellently. The College consists  of three distinct Faculties namely:

  • Basic Medical & Health Science
  • Basic Clinical Sciences
  • Clinical Sciences

In the Basic Medical & Health Sciences domiciled in Iwo, we have Departments of Anatomy; Physiology; Nursing Science, Physiotherapy, Public Health and Medical Laboratory Science. Ogbomoso houses both the Basic Clinical Sciences and Clinical Sciences Faculties. The Basic Clinical Sciences hosts Departments of Chemical Pathology, Haematology & Blood Transfusion; Medical Microbiology & Parasitology, Anatomic Pathology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics. While the Clinical Sciences have Departments of Family Medicine, Community Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynaecology

MBBS – Duration: 6 years

Department of Medicine and Surgery offers a six (6) year programme for training of Medical Doctors after which students are awarded the First Degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B., BS). An MBBS certificate from Bowen University makes a student to become a distinctive Medical Doctor with a unique moral standing and spiritual strength.

The MBBS curriculum in the College of Health Sciences is unique because of its innovation in Medical training and the inclusion of an intercalated B. Sc. Programme in the following:

  • B. Sc. Human Anatomy (Intercalated)
  • B. Sc. Human Physiology (Intercalated)

These programmes allow Bowen University medical graduates to earn two degrees – MBBS and either B.Sc. Human Anatomy (Intercalated) or B. Sc. Physiology (Intercalated).

(B. Sc. Physiology) – Duration: 4 years

This is a four (4) year course which offers a B.Sc. degree in Human Physiology. It is one of the fields of Basic Medical Sciences that studies mainly the functions of the human body systems. These systems include: Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Renal, Cardiovascular, Muscoskeletal, Embryology and Reproductive, Endocrinology and Neurophysiology.

Career Options

Graduates of Human Physiology may work as faculty, researchers and providers of essential community services. They can have careers such as; Healthcare tutors in Universities, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Biomedical Laboratory, Technology companies and other paramedical institutions. They can serve as researchers in specialized physiological research units.
They are also needed in sport as exercise physiologists, in pharmaceutical industries as researchers for drug development, in various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) as data officers, environmental scientists, scientists and research officers.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.Physiotherapy ) – 5 years

Physiotherapy is a health profession that has been on demand globally. Physiotherapists provide treatment and rehabilitative care using physical energies, electro physical agents and mechanical modalities in preventive health care, improving patients’ potentials and restoring patients’ capabilities in functional activities following diseases and surgeries. It is partly complementary to medicine and also offers panacea and rehabilitative management in a wide range of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Bowen University is the first private faith based university to start the B.PT programme.

Career Options

Physiotherapists have ample job prospects in Hospitals such as the primary health institutions, private hospitals, secondary and tertiary health institutions, private health institution and are licensed to establish physiotherapy clinic. A physiotherapist can also work in the public health sector aside hospitals, fitness centres or health clubs, sport clubs. occupational health centres, special schools and senior citizen centres.

Additionally, a physiotherapist can also work as an academic and in research institutes.
