The Department offers three programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN MICROBIOLOGY

(B. Sc. Microbiology) – Duration: 4 years

Microbiologists study and harness the micro-organisms in nature. Microbiology encompasses a wide range of sub-disciplines including virology, mycology, parasitology and bacteriology.
Professionals in this field study microbes and how they interact with the environment. They also study how the human health is affected by these microbes. Consequently, they often act as medical consultants due to their superior knowledge of microorganisms.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN PLANT BIOLOGY

(B. Sc. Plant Biology) – Duration: 4 years

Plant Biology deals with all plant organisms. It offers courses in pure and applied areas of Biology. Plant Biology has relevance in biotechnology, pharmacy and drug discovery, medicine, ethno botany, agriculture, environment and conservation.

The programme is designed for the award of a B.Sc. degree in Plant Biology.  The course is well fashioned in both pure and applied areas of Plant Biology. It would also provide a solid background for the production of graduates well equipped to join a responsible, high level manpower needs of the nation and to confidently relate with International colleagues.

Career Options

A degree in plant biology can be useful in Agriculture, Architectural Landscaping, Herbal Medicine and in academic institutions. There are also employment opportunities in Food Science and Technology, Biochemistry and Agricultural Administration.

(B. Sc. Zoology) – Duration: 4 years

Zoologists study the evolution of animals, their interaction with various habitat and the behavioural distinctions that make them unique.

Professionals in this field works to improve the animals’ quality of life and consequently, they also affect quality of human life positively through their work.

Some zoologists delve into animal genetics and disease while others do research to enable the improvement of life of animals in enclosed places.

The programme is conceived to produce graduates of Zoology with solid background to contribute to the needs of the nation and confidently relate with international colleagues.

Career Options

Zoologists may be employed by Colleges where they will teach and engage in research. Others may work for Government Agencies in areas such as; Wildlife Management, Conservation and Agriculture.

There are also employment opportunities in Pharmaceuticals, Biological supply houses, Animal Museums and Zoos.

(B. Sc. Biochemistry) – 4 years

Biochemistry is a discipline that studies the chemical processes within and relating to the whole living organisms. It is intertwined with Molecular Biology and it strives to understand the molecular mechanisms by which genetic information is encoded and able to result in the processes of life. The Bowen B.Sc. (Biochemistry) programme is designed and delivered to equip our graduates with scientific knowledge. laboratory expertise and transferable skills to enable them to successfully compete in the global environment of the 21st century.

The programme is designed to offer intensive experience in Biochemistry with emphasis on the practical aspects. It is aimed at producing high-level manpower with academic and professional skills to serve in any capacity in academics, research institutes and industries.

Career Options

Given the centrality of Biochemistry to life and the versatility of the Bowen B.Sc. Biochemistry programme. our graduates have a whole range of career options in both the public and private sectors; indeed at the present time a few of them have gone on to successfully establish their own businesses directly after their National Youth Service.

There are opportunities in areas such as Banking. Objectives

The objectives are to

  • train students to fully understand the biochemical basis of life from the unicellular prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms;
  • train to appreciate cell-to-cell interactions and the molecular basis of these interactions. The knowledge gained will be applicable in the field of molecular biology, biochemical toxicology, genetic engineering, nutritional biochemistry, biotechnology, clinical medicine, pharmaceutical science, agricultural science, environmental and industrial carcinogenesis;
  • contribute to the technological advancement of this country in the areas of scientific research and in the manufacturing industries such as food and beverage industries, pharmaceutical industries, chemical industries, etc;

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN CHEMISTRY

(B. Sc. Chemistry) – Duration: 4 years

The Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry offers two degree programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Chemistry.

Chemistry is a basic science course that affects all aspects of applied sciences e.g, Medicine, Pharmacy, Industrial Chemistry, Vet. Medicine, Agriculture etc. Without Chemistry some, if not all the other courses, will collapse.
The industrial development of any country depends on the chemical industries in such a country and this in turn depends on the chemistry graduates produced. As a matter of fact there are more small scale industries which are chemistry based than any other discipline.

The programme is designed to produce graduates with a good understanding of Chemistry, self-reliant and employable at national and international levels.

Objectives
  • to provide students with a thorough grounding in the knowledge and physical principles of chemical compounds and processes;
  • to give students a thorough training in the theory, instrumentation and practice of a wide range of analytical techniques and technological advancement;

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY

(B. Sc. Industrial Chemistry) – Duration: 4 years

Industrial Chemistry is a general term covering a broad spectrum of applied Chemistry in food, textiles, plastics, soap and pharmaceutical industries. Nigeria is lagging behind in industrial development because it has not developed it petrochemical industries. This is due to lack of industrial chemists and the unwillingness of government to develop its industrial and chemical engineering faculties. Industrial Chemistry in Bowen is a popular course and has a good regular intake and very high future prospects in industries and self employment.

Career Options

Industrial Chemistry is a course with a wide range of possible career paths. Professionals in this field are at par with Chemical Engineers and engage in jobs with Chemical Production companies, Research Institutes and Agricultural Industries etc.
Chemists are frequently employed as Environmental scientists and quality control managers in industries.

Computer Science is concerned with the study of principles, design development and analysis of computer hardware and software to solve problems in a variety of business, scientific and social settings. Computing is part of everything we do now. It offers great opportunities for true creativity and innovativeness as well as many lucrative career opportunities in industry, government, banks, health sector, military, etc.

The programme is conceived to produce graduates of Computer Science with adequate academic and research background. The training would be geared towards the development of the theory of computing and applications of Information Technology intended to be beneficial to society.

Computer Science and Information Technology are widely adopted in virtually every area of human endeavour. The undergraduate degree programme in Mathematics covers a wide spectrum of both pure and applied Mathematics to produce highly skilled graduates.

The relevance of Mathematics to our contemporary world cannot be over-emphasized. It helps to develop the analytical minds of students in such a way that their usefulness transverse a wide spectrum of disciplines and professions. The indispensability of Mathematics is further reinforced by its robust embrace and applications by the industrial and business world in the areas of innovation and quality control/assurance, simulation programming and mathematical modeling as well as cost-effective analysis. (B. Sc. Statistics) – 4 years

Statistics deals with the collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of numerical data. Therefore the philosophy of the degree programme requires a highly professional and academic training that would enable its graduates to function as statisticians, teachers, researchers and policy makers.

The Programme offers courses in the following areas: Statistics, Statistics combined with Economics, Basic Statistical methods, Probability, Socio-Economic Statistics, Design and Analysis of Experiments, Survey Methods and Sampling Theory, Operations Research, Industrial Training, Statistical Control Methods and courses in Economics and Computer Science are offered as core courses.

(B. Sc. Physics and Solar Energy ) – Duration: 4 years

Physics being the study of matter and energy, involving postulates, theories and experimentation, the ‘hands on’ approach is adopted in the curriculum. In the lectures, emphasis is placed on identifying and understanding the principles of Physics and Solar Energy, while the laboratory courses, demonstrations and tutorials are aimed at reinforcing the understanding of existing theories, discovering new principles and paving the way to the technological and other applications of Physics.

Without specialists in this field. the modern world would be primitive and undeveloped at best. The study of Physics has brought about many pivotal discoveries in the 20th and 21st centuries including radio, tv, electron, microscopes, computer technology, solar energy and nuclear technology.
Like Physicists such as Albert Einstein who has altered the cause of humanity through his work, students in this department have an opportunity to excel as professionals in the field.

Objectives
  • to give students such laboratory training that makes them conversant with the principles and methods of making decisions, measurements and observations, as well as appreciation of various types of observational and other errors;
  • to equip students with adequate and relevant mathematical tools needed for solving physical problems;
  • to equip students with computer programming ability and enable them to    benefit from the modern and rapidly advancing information technology;
  • to train students in basic workshop practice (mechanical and electronics) such that they acquire the ability to fabricate and repair simple devices and equipment;
  • to produce graduates that would fill the manpower needs in the appropriate areas of the national economy, including solar energy and other renewable energy utilization industries for sustainable development; and that also have some entrepreneurship urge and skill;
  • to equip students with adequate knowledge in Physics and skills for independent study required to pursue postgraduate studies and research;
  • to encourage students to initiate and participate as much as possible in local, national and international activities for the promotion and appreciation of Physics in schools, communities and government circles.
